I switched my dogs to Nature's Variety RAW medallions one meal, and the Nature's Variety kibble for the other. I know some people say it isn't good to mix, but I make sure that enough time has passed between meals. So far, it seems to be great for them. I do have a question though.. is their a certain type of meat that would help my Frenchie with muscle mass? He is a year old, and maybe he just hasn't filled out yet, but I think he is a little skinner than most Frenchie's I have seen. Currently I have him on venison. :)

I'm not sure if any one meat source contributes more to muscle mass than any other...
however variety and rotation of protein sources is VERY important for a dog's diet, and you should not be feeding one source (i.e. venison) only
you should read Kymythy Shultze's book entitled, Natural Nutrition for Dogs and Cats: The Ultimate Diet for a full explanation...
in fact, everyone feeding raw should read this book (and fran gives me and "amen" I'm sure ;) )
I don't know if that's any help... but there you have it :o

I do rotate.. the last time I bought the RAW food, it was beef. I don't rotate every day though. Should I?? I also give them lamb bones. I will pick up that book. I don't really want to prepare meals for them, and the only RAW available to me in this area is the Nature's Variety, and believe it or not only ONE store in Kansas City carries it! I might have to start buying it online to try the different kinds. Thanks for the reply!

I wasn't suggest ing to read the book so that you would prepare the food yourself... actually I also feed my pup Nature's Variety and I think it's great... the book is just a great resource all around :)

An Amen to Heather..
Your dog may never "fill out".It depends on heredity and genes. And where your dog comes from. In addition , just meat alone is not going to build muscle mass. Excersize is an essential part of building muscle in dogs, just as it is in people.
What is your dog's background? Is it American bred? Or an import.? Many of the dogs that have an import background tend to be lankier and thinner. And no amount of excersize or food can change the basic build of the dog.

He is an American boy. I contacted my breeder and she said both his parents are smaller FB's, so I guess that is my answer. I am just use to the other 2 Frenchies in our family that have very muscular legs and arms. haha... Radio is built like a tank, but he has a smaller face and doesn't have that squatty look to me. His ears are HUGE, so I guess that makes up for it. No matter, we love him, I just thought maybe I was missing something in his meat diet. I have noticed his rear is starting to get significantly higher than the front too! :p
